PR. 4 Engineering Class

       PRINCIPLES OF ENGINEERING I

Good Afternoon.  Today 10-6-21 you will continue working on the crane problem.  You should have all completed the below for the crane problem to date:

1) Problem statement

2) Research ideas saved to google doc with problem statement

3) Sketch ideas created, discussed among team members

4) Best solution selected

5) Collect materials and begin redesign build

NOTES for class:

All materials needed will be on the front table next to my desk.  I think most groups have supplies to begin the project.  Remember the supplies follow the guidelines as attempt #1.

If you complete the crane and are ready to test, go to the cantilever page on the blog and complete "Crane strain #2"

           BEFROE WEIGHT TEST IS PERFORMED

YOU MUST WEIGH YOUR CRAINE

MAKE THE PREDICTION BEFORE YOU TEST IT

COLOR RED WHERE YOU EXPECT FAILURE

TAKE A PICTURE BEFORE YOU TEST

TAKE A VIDEO OR SEVERAL PICTURES AS YOU TEST

Exploring Careers In Engineering

Continuing our conversation on engineering.  Lets explore the different branches of Engineering and what some of those branches actually do.

Choose the car link below to proceed

Now this is cool car

CHECK OUT THESE THESE LINKS EXPLORING FUTURE JOBS IN ENGINEERING

1) READ THE JOBS SATISFACTION FIRST

2)THEN THE ARTICLE ON FORBES.

3)NEXT LOOK AT STEM JOBS, FOLLOW THE INFORMATION BELOW THE PICTURE OF WHAT TO SEARCH.

4) THE "TRY ENGINEERING LINK WILL ASSIST YOU IN NARROWING YOUR FOCUS OF WHAT IS INTERESTING AREAS TO YOU.

5) NEXT IS THE ABORIGINAL WHICH IS ANOTHER SITE LIKE THE LAST.

FINALLY THE THIRD THAT OFFER MORE INSIGHT INTO  ENGINEERING AND HOW SOME ARE LEVERAGING THE FUTURE, EXPLORE DEEP, I AM OFFERING YOU A FEW SITES HERE, BUT PLEASE DO NOT STOP HERE, USE THIS TIME TO POINT YOUR DESTINY IN ANY DIRECTION YOU SEE.

JOB SATISFACTION.....IS YOUR DEGREE WORTH IT!

Forbes

STEM JOBS  STEP IN TO YOUR FUTURE
~This is a comprehensive site, with job information and forecasts for jobs, salaries
and paths to arrive in an job field of interest to you.    Go to this link then choose
Job seekers, choose job search.  There you will find a description of the job
                          and salaries.

Aboriginal Access to Engineering

ASSIGNMENT  Create a document and submit it to the google assignment and answer the questions below.

1)Explain the areas most interest you and what specifically about this area peaks your interest.   Beyond saying it's "cool"  what makes it cool, interesting, exciting, well paying etc.

2)If you were working in the field of your choice, and you could choose what project you would be working on what would it be? why that?

4)Take a moment to consider the down stream affects of how your solution could affect generations to come, explain why there would be minimal affects or potential ones.

YOU DONT NEED TO DO THIS SECTION
I would also like you to create 3 questions that can be used for the questions and answer sessions with the Engineers at Husky.  They do not have to be specific to their operations and practices, however they may be if you wish.  Any questions you have thought about in your research around engineering, college, the transition, we can discuss this more in class

Fluid Dynamics: Pneumatic & Hydraulic Systems

Hydraulic Systems

Pre-Assessment

Proficiency to be studied
Abilities for a Technological World
Students will develop the ability to intentionally apply the design process,
implementation of tools and machines to model, test, troubleshoot, observe, investigate,
and analyze the relationship between solutions and assess impacts on all
technological products and systems.
Standard 12.  Students will develop the abilities to use and maintain technological products and systems.

These will be added to and updated.

Assignments ~ Please follow the links to complete each assignment below.  Please do them in order as they appear.  Please make certain you read the description of each activity and the directions in their entirety as you work through the experiments.

#1) Pneumatic Vs. Hydraulic Activity Sheet~ This experiment helps you form a basic understanding of the difference between pneumatic  and hydraulics.  Please follow the directions of the sheet to perform both activities.  Please read the questions before you do each activity, so you have an understanding of what you should be observing during the activity.

#2 How Do Hydraulic Systems Work?

This document gives you an overview of how how systems work together as they are integrated with either hydraulics or pneumatics'

#3 Wisc Online Tutorials ~ Go through the tutorials below learning how Hydraulic cylinders provide forces where needed and how they act when certain forces are applied back as a load

     A) Hydraulic System

#4)  States of Matter
I will present this topic to the class.  You will need the information contained with in this presentation to answer the questions for the document in #4 & #5

Watch the video below to develop an understanding of how Pascals Law works with-in a system

#7) Assignment: Complete tutorials below submit your final score to the assignment in the classroom

Before we get the the robot design elements.  Lets research concepts behind the mechanisms that will be used to make the robot operate. More explanation in class

Follow the LINK to go to an example of a research page:

This is a comprehensive document of a major project that will encompass your learning during the semester.  Below are the learning targets and proficiencies

Work Power & Gears

 SIMPLE COMPOUND MACHINES Pre-Assessment

Follow this link and begin to create an understanding on gears.  Each subsequent heading relates directly to this entire project.  Each heading is linkable with the bullets below representing the main topics discussed.

GEARS GEARS & MORE GEARS

Please follow the links below and explore gearing, compound machines, gear ratio and work/power concepts.  Each link will bring you through a short activity guiding you towards mastering each concept.

Work VS. Power

  • Work Vs. Power what does this mean?
  •   How to calculate (W)ork
  • How to calculate (P)ower
  •  Calculating power in rotational mechanisms
  •

 Simple Machines ---A Review

  • A review of the simple machines

  Gear Nomenclature

This will give you a background of gears. complete each activity

 What is Torque

  •    What is torque?
  • How to calculate torque?
  • Calculating for Horsepower RPM and torque.

Gear Ratio Concepts

  • Focus on the relationship of Input and out put gears.
  • Relationships of distances traveled for input and output gears.
  • Ratio vs. Circumference
  • Number of rotations.

       More on Gear Ratios

  •       Review Input (Driver)
  •        Review Output (follower)
  •        Classroom lesson activity
  •      Use this LINK for the site then follow the activity by clicking on gears on the Left hand side.

     Calculating Outputs  HP, RPM...

    • This is not for the faint hearted.  This is the real deal.  If you want to gain a understanding
    • Calculating for Horsepower RPM and torque
    • Feet, lbs and RPM’s

        Assignments

    1.    . Complete each assignment listed above.  Although you are not handing these in you are responsible for demonstrating your mastery of each component
    2.      Complete Simple Machines a Review.  Read this material and follow each link at the bottom for each   activity.
