Design Evaluation and Simulation

HI everyone.  I am adding to this great opportunity you have as your learning solidworks.  Today I would like you to expand on Simulations and motion studies.  Therefor these are the steps you need to take to do this...

Very Important To Do This Step
1)  Open up Solidworks and choose tutorials out of the right hand side plane.  If it is not visible click on the little house in the same area then on the cap that says tutorial.

2) Now choose this - Design Evaluation and Simulation

3) Next choose what the red arrow is pointing to: Go to Solidworks simulation tutorials

4) Next Pick Motion along a path...

                               READ STEP 5 Carefully

         5) In the picture to the right it shows you to   To select Tools >Add-Ins                                       Hover over the Solidworks logo at the top of the page and move                                     towards the arrow just to the right an the fly out will open up..then select tools>add-ins
If you miss this step nothing will work from here out.

 6) It will look like the picture below.
check mark the radio button circled in red.

7) Proceed following the tutorial.  Read a few steps ahead of  the one you are actually on, before you take action on that specific one.

8) You will be asked to change the motor and the linear spring values, the tutorial refers to these being in the property manager which is shown her on the left side of the screen.  Record the data the plots represent for each study, using the snipping too and paste them into a google doc, I will take a look at later..

Another option to consider in Solidworks.  Creating threads in Solidworks.

If you finish this study you may pick another study under Design Evaluation and simulation.  or work on your other project if is not finished

Procedure for gear box period 2

Problem:
There is a need to design a gear box that can be geared to both;
       1) Lift the most amount of weight.
       2) Lift a given amount of weight the fastest as compared to the other competitors

All materials are on the bench over by the sink.  I trust all of you to use what you know.  This list is reasonably complete.  That said, there will be areas where you have to adjust to make your project work.  Strive to solve your problems and develop a reasonable solution.

Procedure

1) Get your Gear box
2) Get your base if it is not already attached.
4) There is a small box of pan head screws that you should use to attach the gearbox to the base.
5) First identify where you want your gearbox to sit on the base
*remember that the gearbox must slightly hang over the edge so you can pull out the metal                   clip so the gear ratio's can be changed.
6) Drill a small pilot hole in the base for the screws, some people did this yesterday, they can show you.
7) Attach to the base.
8) Attach the battery clip to the motor.  You should solder this on.  (ALEX, would you please show people how to do this part)
9) Make a carrier cup for the payload.  use the clear cups string and paper clips.
10) Once you have the cup attach the string to the pulley by going over the barrel, then go from the inside face out through the hole and tie a knot on the outside of the pulley face. (if you need to slightly enlarge this hole go ahead, but do not make it too big)
11) Now attach the pulley on the rod to the gear box.  This is a very tight fit.  That is okay, do not enlarge the hole.  You can flip the gear box over an place the rod on the bench and lightly top the pulley onto the rod using the orange hammer.
12) Now design your test.

THE TEST
1) Identify the gear ratio you have in the gear box
2) Identify the amount of weight you will be picking up.  Use the digital scale to measure this.
3) Record the information
4) Time your test.

(We used the geared box set from Kelvin for this)

MasterCam Vectors

Creating Vectors:

ASSIGNMENT:
Download COMPLETE CHIP TEMPLATE file.  Save it in your H Drive
Pay special attention to the diameter chip you select.
Analyze the circle diameter and change if necessary.

Tutorial #4
Please open tutorial #4 and work on the tutorial.  It goes hand in hand with what we have done in class with MasterCam so far.  When the directions send you to get the "sports image" don't follow them.  You can access the sports image with the below link,  It will bring you to my web page, scroll down to mastercam then sports image. Download the file on your "H"  drive then follow the directions to access the file in the tutorial.

USE THIS LINK TO BRING YOU TO THE WEB PAGE TO DOWNLOAD THE SPORTS IMAGE 1 UNDER MASTERCAM.

Parameters for Chip Engrave

1) Must have a contour
2) Must have a pocket
3) Must have letters present on chip 1 or 2

Other ideas for simple projects.  Please do your research and add to the list.   There are a multitude of sites.  Your continuous engineering project, can incorporate the use of Solidworks, Mastercam and laser Technology.
