POE PRE-ASSESSMENT

Principles Of Engineering I

Introduction

1) Create a folder in your Google Drive name it "Engineering"
2) Once you create your folder follow this link Brain Teaser and make a copy in your folder.
3) Answer the following question at the bottom of the GD on the new document.

Please complete this initial engineering pre assessment.  Follow this link, make a copy, and put it into you Principles of Engineering folder.

Biomimicry

How Mother Nature Has Influenced

Engineering

ways engineers have been inspired by design..

The Innovators Using Nature's Design Principles to Create Green Tech

Examples of Biomimicry design

Using Mother Natures Genius in Architecture

Biomemetric materials

Key Questions to consider before you begin your design.

  1. Do shapes influence design?

  2. Do Animals/environment  influence engineering /design?

  3. Does animals adaptation influence design concepts?

  4. Think about what type of things could improve peoples lives

Application steps.

1) Think about answers to the questions above on your own

2) Find animal influences or something specific in mother nature

that influences you to INVENT or INNOVATE the design of a product

     FTWE (feathers, teeth, wings, eyes)

Design your product...Concept must come directly from the above...Color changing chameleon.  Octopus rope...Does not have to work but has to have the conception of how something specific can be applied for a new product.

Used clay, straws, glue guns...very simple stuff 3 class periods to design/build/present

Standards to be addressed

PBGR 1: The Nature of Technology

Students will identify and demonstrate the interrelationships between technologies and other fields, working to become technologically literate and adaptable in all situations.

PBGR 2:Technology and Society

Students will develop an understanding of the role technology played in

society throughout history as well as the influence/effect technology currently

plays culturally, socially and environmentally and how technologies can continually

evolve to benefit society.

PR. 4 Engineering Class

       PRINCIPLES OF ENGINEERING I

Good Afternoon.  Today 10-6-21 you will continue working on the crane problem.  You should have all completed the below for the crane problem to date:

1) Problem statement

2) Research ideas saved to google doc with problem statement

3) Sketch ideas created, discussed among team members

4) Best solution selected

5) Collect materials and begin redesign build

NOTES for class:

All materials needed will be on the front table next to my desk.  I think most groups have supplies to begin the project.  Remember the supplies follow the guidelines as attempt #1.

If you complete the crane and are ready to test, go to the cantilever page on the blog and complete "Crane strain #2"

           BEFROE WEIGHT TEST IS PERFORMED

YOU MUST WEIGH YOUR CRAINE

MAKE THE PREDICTION BEFORE YOU TEST IT

COLOR RED WHERE YOU EXPECT FAILURE

TAKE A PICTURE BEFORE YOU TEST

TAKE A VIDEO OR SEVERAL PICTURES AS YOU TEST

Exploring Careers In Engineering

Continuing our conversation on engineering.  Lets explore the different branches of Engineering and what some of those branches actually do.

Choose the car link below to proceed

Now this is cool car

CHECK OUT THESE THESE LINKS EXPLORING FUTURE JOBS IN ENGINEERING

1) READ THE JOBS SATISFACTION FIRST

2)THEN THE ARTICLE ON FORBES.

3)NEXT LOOK AT STEM JOBS, FOLLOW THE INFORMATION BELOW THE PICTURE OF WHAT TO SEARCH.

4) THE "TRY ENGINEERING LINK WILL ASSIST YOU IN NARROWING YOUR FOCUS OF WHAT IS INTERESTING AREAS TO YOU.

5) NEXT IS THE ABORIGINAL WHICH IS ANOTHER SITE LIKE THE LAST.

FINALLY THE THIRD THAT OFFER MORE INSIGHT INTO  ENGINEERING AND HOW SOME ARE LEVERAGING THE FUTURE, EXPLORE DEEP, I AM OFFERING YOU A FEW SITES HERE, BUT PLEASE DO NOT STOP HERE, USE THIS TIME TO POINT YOUR DESTINY IN ANY DIRECTION YOU SEE.

JOB SATISFACTION.....IS YOUR DEGREE WORTH IT!

Forbes

STEM JOBS  STEP IN TO YOUR FUTURE
~This is a comprehensive site, with job information and forecasts for jobs, salaries
and paths to arrive in an job field of interest to you.    Go to this link then choose
Job seekers, choose job search.  There you will find a description of the job
                          and salaries.

Aboriginal Access to Engineering

ASSIGNMENT  Create a document and submit it to the google assignment and answer the questions below.

1)Explain the areas most interest you and what specifically about this area peaks your interest.   Beyond saying it's "cool"  what makes it cool, interesting, exciting, well paying etc.

2)If you were working in the field of your choice, and you could choose what project you would be working on what would it be? why that?

4)Take a moment to consider the down stream affects of how your solution could affect generations to come, explain why there would be minimal affects or potential ones.

YOU DONT NEED TO DO THIS SECTION
I would also like you to create 3 questions that can be used for the questions and answer sessions with the Engineers at Husky.  They do not have to be specific to their operations and practices, however they may be if you wish.  Any questions you have thought about in your research around engineering, college, the transition, we can discuss this more in class

I would also like you to create 3 questions that can be used for the questions and answer sessions with the Engineers at Husky.  They do not have to be specific to their operations and practices, however they may be if you wish.
